Healthy Apple Crumble
It’s officially Autumn and that means all the cozy sweaters, socks, pumpkin pie everything and yummy warm desserts.
Growing up my mum would make apple crumble for dessert and it got me inspired to create my own recipe using minimal + whole ingredients. While I am a chocolate girl through and through, there is something about apple crumble that just makes me feel nostalgic, happy and comforted.
This is the most simple, delicious and budget friendly dessert that will leave you and your family feeling nourished and satisfied this fall.
Ingredients:
4 granny smith apples
2 cups of rolled oats
4 tablespoons of coconut sugar
1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon of softened coconut oil
1/4 cup of Almond meal
Cinnamon (I didn’t put measurements because everyones level of spice preference varies)
A dash of pink himalayan salt
Let’s break down a few of our ingredients and discover the incredible health benefits from the foods in this dessert!
Apples
They are filled to the brim with fibre, which is going to help support your digestive system.
They also contain antioxidants that help to fight free radicals in the body.
Apples are also full of anti-inflammatory properties.
They are a good source of vitamin C.
Oats
Rolled oats are also a fibre-rich food. Fibre helps prevent and stabilize the sugar spike that comes when we consume a large amount of carbs.
They are also filled with antioxidants.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil supports your immune system because of its antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral properties.
It can help with digestion because it aids the body in absorbing fat soluble vitamins.
It is a great source of healthy fats which is incredible for your hormones.
Cinnamon
This beautiful spice is full of antioxidants, contains anti-inflammatory properties and tastes incredible!
It also helps to stabilize blood sugar levels
Method:
Peel and cut your apples
In a pan on a medium heat add a 1/4 cup of water, cinnamon and your prepared apples to stew for around 20 minutes.
While the apples are cooking, preheat your oven to 375 F
In a bowl combine oats, coconut sugar, almond meal, cinnamon and salt. Stir until well combined.
Once dry ingredients are mixed together, add in the softened coconut oil.
With your hands mix the coconut oil in with the dry ingredients to create the crumble
Once the apples have started to soften, strain excess water and place them in desired baking dish
Add your crumble mixture on top of the apples
Bake for 20 - 25 minutes
